Le memorie di questa illustre famiglia fiorentina risalgono al sec. XIII. Mr. Bonavia giudice, figlio di Lucchese sedeva nel Consiglio degli Anziani nel 1253 quando fu firmata una concordia fra i Fiorentini e i Pistoiesi da una parte e i Pisani dall'altra. Fu detto che Arrigo suo fratello si segnalasse nella battaglia di Montaperti (1260) e che da lui la famiglia prendesse il nome di Sirigatti perché, portando egli sopra il cimiero la figura di un gatto veniva chiamato dai commilitoni francesi il Sire del Gatto. Ma apparendo costui già morto nel 1253 non è da prestarsi fede a tale leggenda, tanto più che da un documento del 1255 di già appare denominato col cognome di Sirigatti il figlio di lui Buonaguida detto Ruzza, il quale avendo vendicato la morte di un suo nipote coll'uccisione dell'omicida, che apparteneva alla consorteria degli Scolari, potentissima nella Val di Pesa dove pure i
