Famiglia oriunda di Valtournanche nella valle d'Aosta, e trasferitasi per ragione di commercio in Chiaverano. Si denominavano nei tempi antichi col duplice cognome di Montiglio e di Massareto. Stipite della famiglia parrebbe essere un Pietro detto Montiglio, il quale già nel 1346 risulta morto. Antonio, che viveva a metà del secolo XVI, si trasferì in Ivrea dove il 24 febbraio 1564 ottenne la cittadinanza. Assunse col figlio Carlo la fornitura delle milizie, riuscendo ad accumulare vistose ricchezze. Il citato Carlo, fu tesoriere nel Canavese, tesoriere generale di qua dai monti, consigliere e mastro uditore camerale. Per i suoi molteplici meriti e per gli acquisti di beni feudali nella castellata di San Martino fu dai conti di San Martino il 13 dicembre 1601 aggregato alla loro casata con facoltà di intitolarsi dei conti di S. Martino ed usare l'arma, con tutti gli onori e preminenze come se fosse originario e disceso
