Famiglia antichissima, che la tradizione fa originaria di Francia e che apparteneva alla nobiltà feudale del territorio senese. Il personaggio più antico di cui si trovi memoria è il conte Bandinello, primo Console di Giustizia della città di Siena nell'anno 1040. Questo Bandinello fu avo del pontefice Alessandro III, da cui il ramo più prossimo prese il nomignolo di Paparoni, che poi divenne il secondo cognome. Da questo ceppo originario comune, che formava la consorteria dei Bandinelli, si staccarono tre rami, che formarono tre famiglie distinte: Bandinelli, Bianchi e C., i quali ultimi presero il nome del castello di Cerreto Ciampoli, che era in possesso della famiglia fin dal secolo XI. I membri della famiglia furono tra i Grandi della loro città, nella quale si trovano aver sempre occupato le più alte cariche, imparentandosi con le famiglie più illustri.
