APA | APE | API

Apa is a typical Calabrian surname, with a strain also in Naples, Ape, much much more rare, is instead specific to Monopoli in the Bari area, Api has a very small strain in Andretta nell'avellinese and a more consistent one in Ostra Vetere in the Ancona area, all these surnames should derive both from the Italian word ape and from its dialectal variants, probably meaning to define the progenitors as beekeepers, or even underlining a particular industriousness of the same, there is also the possibility that in some cases it may derive from modifications of the name of the Appi of the Gens Appia (a family of the Gens Claudia which was also ascribed the territory of Bari), we must consider that the name Apius is a consolidated variant of this noble.
