ABAGNATO | ABBAGNATO

Abagnato, absolutely rare, is perhaps from the Reggio area, Abbagnato, a little less rare, it would seem specific to Palermo. additions provided by Stefano Ferrazzi The origin of these surnames is to be found in the medieval name Abbagnato (variant of the more common Bagnato), to be understood probably in the sense of baptized, purified with holy water (for a more detailed explanation of the origin of the name , see the surname Bagnato). From the etymological point of view, in fact, the verb abbagnare comes from an archaic or dialectal form of the verb bagnare, in which the addition of the prefix a- (from the Latin ad) indicates approach or tendency towards something (as it happens, on the other hand, in verbs such as accompanying, rushing, juxtaposing, etc). As far as the surnames in question are concerned, therefore, these are the surnames of the personal names of the founders, even if in some cases a derivation from nicknames attributed to them is not excluded.
