ALFARANI | ALFARANO | ALFERANO

Alfarani is unique, Alferano is almost unique and are probably due to errors of transcription of the much more widespread Alfarano, which is a typical Apulian surname, in particular of Salento, with strains also in Rome, Naples and Reggio, it should derive from the name Greek Alpheranas, but a derivation from an Italianization of the Arabic name Al Farrah cannot be excluded. The Alfaranos formed a noble baronial house of Greek origin, related to the Capece, descendant of Alano Lord of Epirus. The Alfaranos exercised Lordship over many lands of the Salento, between 1571 and 1582 Tiberio Alfarano, born in Gerace (RC), designed the project for the extension of the Basilica of San Pietro in Rome, was made Chierico Beneficiato di S. Pietro and, in the 1590, was made Archpriest.
