ALTOMARE | ALTOMARI

Altomare has a main nucleus in Molfetta (BA) and one in Rogliano, Santo Stefano di Rogliano and Luzzi in the Cosenza area, it also has a small stock in Castel San Giorgio (SA) and in Naples, Altomari would seem to be specific to Acri (CS), should derive from dialectal modifications of the medieval name of Germanic origins Aldemarus or Valdemarus of which we have an example in the early 1200s with the king of the Danes and the Slavs Valdemar: "... Accessit tandem et Travemunda Sigebergumque: mortuoque Canuto, frater eius Valdemarus, Rex Danorum, Sclavorumque, and Nordalbingiae Dominus Lubecae salutatus; Lavenburgum munitissimum ad Albim castrum ... ".
