AMBU

Ambu, decidedly Sardinian, from Cagliari and Cagliari, could derive from a nickname originating from a contraction of the Sardinian term ámbulu (black or red for fabrics). additions provided by Giuseppe Concas AMBU: in Italian both (from the Latin ambo) means both; or it is a winning combination in the game of bingo or lotto. Ambos, ambas in Logudorese means both; ambadùs or ambedùs, extended to all of Sardinia. It could come from bamboo = tasteless. It is said: custu brodu esti ambu = this broth is bambo, insipid (from the bamboo root, from which it also derives child). As a surname it is not present in ancient maps. Currently we find it in 53 Italian Municipalities, of which 23 in Sardinia (mostly in Cagliari): Selargius 226, Cagliari 84, Monserrato 78, Quartu SE 23, etc.
