BUTTU

Absolutely rare Buttu is specific of the Nuorese, of Gavoi and Nuoro in particular. additions provided by Giuseppe Concas BUTTU: su buttu de su carru, is the hub of the wagon wheel, for example, of the ox cart. According to the scholar ML Wagner comes from the Piedmontese but, of identical meaning (But, moreover, is a surname present in 19 Municipalities of Northern Italy). The same Wagner points out that the Piedmontese introduced (in the XVIIIth century) in Sardinia the wheels of the rayed carts, which replaced the full ones. Here in Campidano we use the adjective buttu per bruttu, to indicate object, animal or dirty person. Not finding the surname in the ancient documents of the Sardinian language, we confirm the first hypothesis. The surname Buttu is present in 17 Italian Municipalities, of which 12 in Sardinia: Gavoi 49, Nuoro 17, Oristano 6, Iglesias 5, etc.
