CALIGIURI | CALOGERI | CALOGERO | CALOGIURI

Caligiuri is from Calabria, from the lower Cosenza area, Catanzaro and Crotone. Calogeri is absolutely rare, Calogero is typical of eastern Sicily and of the Reggio area, Calogiuri is specific to Salento, of Lizzanello (LE) in particular, they should all derive from the Greek term kalogheros (fine old), a title reserved in particular for friars and people of respect , in some cases it is also possible to derive from the Greek name Kalogeros or in some cases from the Greek toponym Kalogeros or from one of the toponyms containing the root Calogero such as San Calogero (VV) and (AG) or Piano Calogero (PA) .. We can find these surnames from the 1500s in Lizzanello with the Calogiuri and in the second half of the 1700s in Bella (CZ) with the canon don Francesco Caligiuri.
