FARABEGOLI

Farabegoli is specific to the Forlì and Ravenna areas of Cesena, Cesenatico, Gambettola in the Cesena area and to Cervia in the Ravenna area. It may derive from the union of the Lombard term fara (community), combined with the dialect word begoli, for which we can hypothesize the meaning of bugs , but the most probable thing is that instead it derives from the medieval term begolo or begolardo (court man, buffoon, clown), a term of which we have an example of use in the Regiment of the principles of Egidio Romano of 1288: "..Appresso to see that he gives what he best gives, and not for anything else, and every time that the king or others gives to the begolards or to the men of the court, or to whom they owe not, they are not larger or liberal "For the jugglers and the knitters, and many ways of the people must be better than rich ...", in this case the surname would take on the meaning of court or village buffoon.
