FERMI | FERMO

Fermi is typical of Piacenza and Piacenza, Fermo has a stock in Milan and its surroundings, one in Trieste, one in Formia, one in Ischia and one in Tito (PZ), they could derive from toponyms such as San Fermo (MI), but more probably derive from the Latin name Firmus of which we have an example in the Historiae of Ammianus Marcellinus (330 ca - 395): "... and quibus Zammac comiti nomine Romano acceptus, latenter a fratre Firmo peremptus discordias excitavit ...", of the use in medieval times we have an example in a deed dated 770 which states: "... Ego qui supra Firmus notarius pos traditione conpleui et emisi". additions provided by Andrea Ferreri - Milano Fermi is a particularly common surname in the Piacenza area, with some significant presence also in Milan, Treviso, Genoa and Chieti. The epicenter of diffusion is the area that includes the municipalities of Piacenza, Cortemaggiore, Fiorenzuola d'Arda and Monticelli d'Ongina. According to the glottologist Emidio De Felice (Dictionary of Italian surnames) the surname is based on the topographical name of Fermo from the Marche region. However, I would not exclude other derivation hypotheses. Enrico Fermi was born in Rome on September 29th 1901. As a child he showed great interest and propensity for mathematics and physics. His preparation continued in high school, where he graduated in 1918, and later at the normal school of Pisa. During his university studies Enrico Fermi dedicated himself to an intense research activity on the distinctive features of sound and X-ray diffraction by crystals. Together with a group of young Fermi graduates he was able to complete the studies that led him to the formulation of the mathematical theory of Beta decay and to the discovery of slow neutrons. The enormous value of the discovery yielded to Fermi the awarding of the Nobel Prize for physics in 1938. Subsequently he devoted himself, until the moment of his death in 1954, to the study of the subatomic structure and to the analysis of the reactions between Pions and Nucleons. To pay homage to his enormous contribution to world physics, when unknown subatomic particles were discovered, they were given the name Fermioni.
