La Vecchia is a decidedly southern surname, distributed in patches of leopard throughout the south, with strains particularly in the area that includes Campania, Campobassano, Foggia, Potentino, Cosenza and Catanzaro and above all Sicily with maximum concentration in the area of Catania, Agrigento and Palermo, Lavecchia, always southern, is specific to the area that includes the people of Salerno, Basilicata, Bari and the Catanzaro area, and, to a lesser extent, the Taranto and Brindisi areas, the Cosenza area and the Valentina area, could derive from toponyms containing the old root, but it is also possible a derivation from characteristics of the founders, like that of being sons of an old particular.
