LUCCHESE | LUCCHESI | LUCHESSI

Both Lucchese and Lucchesi are present as leopards in all of Italy, but Lucchesi is more properly Tuscan, where the altered form Luchessi is also present. additions provided by Stefano Ferrazzi The origin of these surnames is to be found either in the medieval name Lucchese or directly in the ethnic city of Lucca, in Tuscany; in the case of the Sicilian stocks, however, it is also likely a connection with the city of Lucca Sicula, in the province of Agrigento (until 1863, in fact, this city was simply called Lucca). From a historical point of view, however, traces of the name Lucchese can be found in Siena during the 13th century, with figures such as Lucchese di Bencivenne, Lucchese d'Ugolino, Lucchese di Peruscino, Lucchese di Gianni da Ovile, etc. As far as the surnames in question are concerned, therefore, these are the surnames or personal names of the progenitors or ethnic nicknames attributed to them.
