MOSNA

Definitely of Tridentine Venice is specific to the city of Trento, it should derive from a place name like Monte Mosna in the vicinity of Besenello (TN), but it could also derive from the medieval word mosa (pantano), "... Quinta pecia terrae que est mosa et canneto ... ". additions provided by Giovanni Vezzelli The vernacular-Italian vocabulary of Giambattista Azzolini (1777-1853) defines 'mosna' (a term from the Trentino dialect that has now fallen into disuse) as "a pile of earth, or stones, or a pile." The surname could therefore be translated into Italian as 'Grava', or 'Dalla Grava'. And on this meaning the Cesarini Sforza ("pile of stones, rubble") and the Lorenzi ("ciottolame, sassara") agree. In particular, Lorenzi, which indicates Vigolo di Sopramonte as the place of origin of the surname, assumes that it is derived from the appellative 'dalla mosna', subsequently losing the 'dalla' to remain in the current form. Lorenzi, again, indicates the analogy with the Ladino Mousna and the German Mussner (from Steinmüsn and from the dialect Müsel, "grava, heap of stones"). The surname is widespread throughout the Valle dell'Adige, with a strong presence in the city of Trento.
