MUSACCHIA | MUSACCHIO | MUSCIACCHIA | MUSCIACCHIO

Musacchia would seem typically Sicilian, from Palermo, Palermo and Piana degli Albanesi, with significant presences also in Partanna in the Trapani area and in San Giovanni Gemini in the Agrigento region, Musacchio has a stock in the Campobasso area in Portocannone, Termoli, Larino and Ururi, and a stock in the area that includes the Basilicata, the Cosenza area and the Crotone area, Musciacchia would seem unique, Musciacchio has a Lucanian lineage in Vaglio Basilicata and in Potenza and an Apulian one, above all in Taranto and Taranto in Lizzano. additions provided by Stefano Ferrazzi Origin arbëreshë, these surnames are born from different Italianizations of the Albanian surname Muzaka (with a variant in Muzhaka), which, in the register of noble houses of Albania, includes one of the most powerful and ancient families of this country, namely the Muzaka family (this surname, in reality, has known multiple transcriptions and, among its many forms, we can mention Muzaqi, Muzhaqi, Muzaki, Myzeqe, etc): in the history of Albania, in effect , the noble Musacchio (this is the most used name in the Italian transposition) enjoyed fame and prestige starting from the XIII century, that is, when Andrea Musacchio was first Lord of Berat and then Marshal of Albania. Regarding the origin of the surname, however, there are no certain hypotheses: according to Gjon Muzaka (one of the leading figures of this family), the surname derives from an original Molassaqje, a term which, in Albanian, indicates the people of Molossi ( an ancient Greek tribe, settled in the north of Epirus); in central Albania, moreover, there is a territory known as the Plain of Myzeqe or Myzeqeja, which, according to some, would take its name from the Musacchio family (other sources, on the other hand, claim that the Musacchio owe their surname to this plain, thus indicating a toponymic origin of the surname itself). Before concluding, however, one thing must be specified: it is true that the surnames Musacchia, Musacchio, etc. are often of noble origin (many of them, in fact, descend directly from the noble Musacchio), but it must also be said that not all of these arbëreshë families are necessarily linked to the Albanian nobility, that is if the original surname presents several strains scattered throughout Albania (perhaps, but not necessarily, coming from the plain of Myzeqe).
