MUSITANI | MUSITANO

Musitani is practically unique and should be a transcription error of the surname Musitano which is specific to Calabria, the Reggio area, Bovalino, Platì and Ardore, could derive from a nickname originated from the Latin word mussitare (low voice), but, much more probably it derives from names of localities identifiable as agro mussidiano, that is property of the Gens Mussidia, which in the Augustan age had consular and proconsular authority in the Calabrian, Sicilian area, from Mussidiano to Musitano the step is short. Famous traces of these surnames can be found in the first half of the 1600s with the learned scholar and illustrious doctor of Castrovillari (CS) Carlo Musitano (1635 - 1714) who wrote many medical works in Naples, the most known of which is De morbis mulierum.
