PEDACE | PEDACI

Pedace is typically Calabrese, from Crotone and Cosentino, from Rossano, Corigliano Calabro, Crosia, Spezzano della Sila and Longobucco, while Pedaci is typical of Salento, Gallipoli and Lecce additions provided by Stefano Ferrazzi At least on the origin of these surnames come together at least two hypotheses, to be considered valid according to the different origins of the Pedace and Pedaci families. Beginning with the first interpretation, first of all, a relationship with the toponym Cosmo Pedace is rather probable, which should hold true above all for Calabrese stocks: in this context, however, it should be noted that the same toponym Pedace actually derives from a surname (it is a predial toponym) and this, then, leads directly to the second hypothesis, which to tell the truth could also apply to the strains of Calabria. In many cases, in fact, these surnames derive directly from the nickname or medieval name Pedace, which, together with its variant in Pedaci, originates from an adaptation of the Greek term paidakis, meaning child, child: in this context, it is easy to see a correspondence with the surnames Fante, Infante, Fanciullo, etc, which, as a whole, are extremely widespread in Italy (in Greece, moreover, there is also the surname Paidakis). As far as the surnames in question are concerned, therefore, these are the surnames or personal names of the founders (perhaps foundlings sometimes) or of nicknames attributed to them (to be understood also in a toponymic sense).
