Pirrone is typically southern, with a small stock in the Salerno area, one in the Potentino and Matera areas, presences in the Cosenza area, a stock in the Catanzaro area and in the Reggio area, but the most consistent nucleus is in Sicily, in the northern part of the island, in the Trapani area, in the Palermo and Messina, with excellent presences also in Catania and Agrigento, Pirroni is typical of Cagliari, of Quartu Sant'Elena and Sestu, should derive from a nickname originated from an augmentative form of the Greek term pyrròs (of the color of fire, red color of hair), probably originated from the red color of the hair of the founders, large in build in consideration of the growth, but could also derive from the Roman name Pyrrhus or from the Greek name Pyrrhos.
