PEZZIMENTI | PIZZIMENTI | PIZZIMENTO

Pezzimenti and Pizzimenti are both typical of the Reggio area, Pizzimenti is the most widespread of the two, Pizzimento. very rare, it is from Catania. Supplements provided by Stefano Ferrazzi Pizzimenti and Pizzimenti are typical of the Reggio area, although the latter also contains minor stocks in the Palermo area and Messina area, while Pizzimento is originally from Catania. Regarding their meaning, these surnames all derive from the dialect word pezzimento or pizzimento (better known in the plural form pezzimenti or pizzimenti), which, in the Greek dialects of the South, literally indicated military baggage. It is difficult, in reality, to indicate the origin of this word: a hypothesis is that it is a substantivized form (through the suffix -mento, common to all the Neo-Latin languages) of the Greek verb pezhevo (pezhos, pezhi, pezhon in adjectival form), which means walking or traveling on foot, by land or, perhaps more properly in this context, being transported on foot, by land. In this way, pieces, pieces of dough, pieces of bread and lumps would literally translate as things that are transported on foot, traveling by land: the reference is to the fact that the military baggage was actually transported by land (on carts or pack animals). ) by the salmerists, who were often peasant or non-warrior. To better understand the rather complex etymology of these dialectal terms, just think of the Latin word impedimenta, the equivalent, that is, of the Italian salmerie: at the base of it we find the verb impedio, which, together with the suffix -menta (plural di -mento), forms a literally translatable noun as things that impede, that are a hindrance, with reference to the problems that the transport of the baggage involved (even if only in terms of time, for example). In conclusion, therefore, Pezzimenti, Pizzimenti and Pizzimento are surnames derived from trade names attributed to the progenitors, who were in fact soldiers in the military armies inside the ancient armies.
