SCARCELLA | SCARCELLI

Scarcella is present in Macchia di Leopard in all Italy has strains in Genoa and in Puglia, an important nucleus in the Messina and Reggio Calabria and in the Cosentino that could derive from place names Scarcelli (ME) and (CS) from which also derives the strain of St. John in Bloom (CS) of Scarcelli, while the strain of Andria (BA) of the surname Scarcelli, like the others, probably derives from nicknames originated from the word scarsella (purse of money). Additions provided by Giovanni Vezzelli Scarcella only for Salento, Rohlfs 170 suggests the derivation from the Salentino dialect ' Scarcedda ' (< Scarcella) = Grancevola, a sort of shellfish of the sea.
