Among the most illustrious, ancient and most noble houses of Navarra, there is that of A., who exercised sovereignty over various territories of Aquitaine during the first centuries of the Middle Ages, and later became one of the great fiefs of Navarra. The first Lord and Baron de A., scion of the noble and very interesting family that seems to fill for centuries the stories of the peoples who inhabited on either side of the Pyrenees, giving Princes to the numerous States that were formed between the struggles of Goths, Franks and Arabs, was Bergán García I, García Arnaldo's second son, Viscount of Dax; grandson of Arnaldo López, Viscount also of Dax; second grandson of Lope Aner, Viscount of Olorón; third grandson of Aznar Sánchez; fourth grandson of Sancho García, Duque de la Gascuña, and eleventh of Eudón, whose colossal figure could not be obscured in the chaos of the troubled times in which he lived. Said Bergán García, first Lord of A., received this Lordship in the year 1040 from the hands of his father, as well as the Baronies of Bergouey and Garris, who were dismembered, for this purpose, from the country of Miza, to which they belonged. The succession of this knight continued in his direct descendants, and his third grandson Bibiano de A., fourth Lord of A., is the first to appear surnamed A. in the genealogy of this house.
