Ancient and illustrious royal family of Georgia, of very clear and ancestral virtue, that has spread over the centuries throughout Europe. Its origins are lost in the memory of time. According to tradition, it originated in Palestine, descending from the seven brothers of the prophet David. Three of these would have arrived in Armenia while the rest would have settled in Kartli, one of the most important regions of Georgia. There, contracting kinship with the local nobility, they would become feudal lords of the region. Guaram, one of the four brothers, already dead in 532, whose son had the name of Bagrat, gave life to the dynasty. Guaram I of Iberia, successor of the lineage, became Prince of Kartli under the protectorate of the Byzantine Empire and invested himself with the Byzantine title of Kouropalates in 575, thus starting the reign of the Bagrationi.
