Ellison
English
The name 'Ellison' originates from England. It is a patronymic of the name 'Ellis', from the medieval name 'Elis', the norman venarcular form of 'Elijah' (from the Greek word 'Elias', from the Hebrew word 'Eliyahu' which means 'Jehovah is God'). This name was borne by a biblical prophet, but its popularity among Christians in the middle Ages was as a result od its adoption by various early saints. In Wales this surname seems to have absorbed forms derived from the Welsh personal name 'Elisedd', a derivative of the word 'elus' which means kindly, benevolent. Compiled information from Historical and Private archive's has confirmed that the surname 'Ellison' and or it's variant's, dates as far back as the 14th century were a 'Adam Elisson', is recorded in 1379. Ellison was a common surname in South West Lancashire, especially in Liverpool, in the 18th and 19th centuries, many bearers were workers in base metals. The exact period of settlement in North America has not been definitely determined but Information extracted from Public and Civil registry archive's confirm that one of the first settlers was a certain 'Lieutenant Richard Ellice', (also spelled variously, 'Elice', 'Allis', 'Alys', 'Elys, or 'Ellis'), of Dedham England. He took the oath of allegiance in London, England, on the 22nd of June 1632, before imigrating to America aboard the ship named the 'Lion'. In 1642 he recieved a grant of lands and later, in 1694, five pounds for services as Representative in the General court. Today, 'Ellison' is the '688th' most common surname in North America. ...
