The surname Grigor is of English origin. It is derived from the given name popular throughout Christendom in the Middle Ages. The name is of Greek origin , 'Gregorios', itself derived from 'gregorien', to be awake or watchful. The name was an extremely popular one with the early Christians, who were mindful of the instruction 'be sober, be vigilant'; ( I Peter 5:8 ). However, at an early date the Latin form 'Gregorius' was associated by folk etymology with 'grex', 'gregis', flock, herd, under the influence of the Christian image of the good shepard.
