The surname Miles is of English origin. It is derived from the Old French from the Germanic personal name Milo, of uncertain etymology, but perhaps ultimately akin to the Slavonic element 'mil-', mercy, grace, favour. The name was introduced into England by the Normans in the form Miles ( in some cases Milon ). In England documents from the Middle Ages usually have the name appear in the Latin form Milo, but the normal Middle English form of the name was Mile, so that the final -s must usually represent the possesive ending, i.e. 'son or servant of Mile'.
