The surname 'David' is of Hebrew origin from the male given name 'David', signifieing 'beloved'. The surname is a patronymic of Davidson, meaning 'the son of David'. The added -s- signifieing the 'son of David'. The given name has been popular amongst the Welsh, Scots, English, French, Portuguese, Czechs and Israelis.
