Very ancient and illustrious family, of clear and proven nobility, whose origins go back to the so-called "feudal consortium of the Sons of Manfredo", also the birthplace of the Pico, Papazzoni, Padelli, Azzolini and Fanti families. In any case, the family recognizes its progenitor in a Bernardo, son of Manfredo. The son of the said Bernardo, such Pio, is remembered as a citizen of Modena in 1168, mayor of the same municipality (1177 - 1178) and rector of the Lombard League, at the congresses of Ferrara and Parma, for peace with Federico Barbarossa. From Pio and his descendants derives the branch of the family of the lords of Carpi, who dominated there from 1319 to 1525. Manfredi I (1269 - 1348), nephew of Bernardo, in fact, was imperial vicar of Modena between 1329 and 1336 together to his cousin Guido Pio, thus obtaining the fief of Carpi from the Estensi. Over the centuries, this house was illustrated thanks to numerous bishops and podestàs in different cities, at the service of the Visconti and then from 1450 of the Savoy. In the fifteenth century, however, the Pio family was divided into three distinct branches: Albertino, Gibertino and Galassino; named after the three brothers Alberto III, Galasso and Giberto, sons of Marco Pio and Taddea, of Cabrino Roberti. Alberto, apostolic protonotaro and abbot of Sant'Antonio di Carpi, then canon in Modena, was in the service of the Visconti from 1437 to 1499, when he sided in favor of the Savoy, obtaining from Duke Ludovico, with a diploma dated Turin January 27, 1450, the fief of San Ciriaco and the possibility of using the Savoy name and coat of arms, as a descendant of the house of Saxony. This privilege was confirmed on May 22, 1567, by Duke Emanuele Filiberto, and on January 20, 1585, by Duke Carlo Emanuele in favor of the Gibertino branch. The lords of Carpi, Verrucchio, Meldola and Sarsina in Romagna descended from Alberto. From Giberto, on the other hand, the two Pio di Sassuolo families originated, extinct in 1499 and 1554, and the Spanish line, extinct in 1776. ...
