Ancient Ferrarese family that had importance in that city from the fifteenth century. A tradition derives it from the lineage of the Bonaccolsi of Mantua but Litta and other scholars deny such a derivation on which they deny such a derivation on which the known documents are silent. The tradition had publicity in Ferrara in the 16th century for a courtesy of the Duke who gave the Bonaccossi, his family, a stone found in the restoration of the walls of Modena in which it was remembered that the walls had been built by the Bonaccolsi Lords also of Modena. This stone is still preserved above a wall of the staircase of the family palace in Padua.
