Antica ed illustre famiglia, di origine catalana. Vuolsi che progenitore dei Cardona sia stato un tal Ramondo Folch, cugino di Re Luigi il Conquistatore, il quale fu uno dei dodici prodi Capitani che liberarono la Catalogna dai Mori. Per tale merito ebbe, infatti la terra di Cardona col titolo di Visconte ed i suoi discendenti presero, attraverso modificazioni dialettali di tal toponimo, il nome di Cardona. Questa famiglia passò in Sicilia col re Pietro d'Aragona nel 1282 e venne in Napoli con Alfonso I d'Aragona. Ha goduto nobiltà in Napoli ai Seggi di Nido e Porto, in Camerino, in Sicilia e nella Spagna. Fu ricevuta nell'Ordine di Malta nel 1524. Si notano monumenti di questa famiglia in Napoli nelle Chiese dell'Annunziata, di S.Sebastiano e delle Monache. In Somma nella Chiesa di S.Maria del Pozzo.
