Ancienne et très noble famille vénitienne, dame de la ville de Padoue, de vertu claire et ancestrale, répartie au cours des siècles dans diverses régions d'Italie. Selon ce qui nous est transmis, la famille est de la même agnation que les Da Carrara ou Carraresi, une dynastie de l'ère post-lombarde qui a pris de l'importance à l'époque communale jusqu'à ce qu'elle prenne le commandement de la seigneurie de la ville de Padoue entre 1318 et 1405. En 1314, Jacques Ier, devenu chef d'une faction populaire, bannit les magistrats et, en 1318, se fit chef de la république. Marsilio, neveu du premier, transféra la domination de la ville à Cane della Scala mais la recouvra avec l'aide des Florentins et des Vénitiens en 1337. Ubertino III, prince de Padoue, mourut en 1345 ; Marsilietto n'a régné que deux mois; Jacques II est mort assassiné en 1350 ; Giacomino fut acclamé seigneur
