Nach unserer Überlieferung ist die Familie von derselben Agnation wie die Da Carrara oder Carraresi, eine Dynastie der nachlombardischen Ära, die während der Gemeindezeit an Bedeutung gewann, bis sie zwischenzeitlich das Kommando über die Stadtherrschaft von Padua übernahm 1318 und 1405. 1314 verbannte Jakob I., nachdem er das Oberhaupt einer Volksfraktion geworden war, die Magistrate und machte sich 1318 selbst zum Oberhaupt der Republik. Marsilio, Neffe des ersteren, übertrug die Herrschaft über die Stadt an Cane della Scala, eroberte sie aber 1337 mit Hilfe der Florentiner und Venezianer zurück.
