Antiga família do Reino das Duas Sicílias, conhecida como Comunale, Cuminali ou Comenale, de clara e ancestral virtude, espalhada ao longo dos séculos em várias regiões da Itália. A origem deste sobrenome, de acordo com o que nos é transmitido, deve ser buscada no nome medieval "Comunianus", derivado por sua vez do nome grego "Chumnos". A família vive na área de Salerno e, mais precisamente, em Castellabate desde o século XV. Uma das suas ramificações, no final do século XVIII, instalou-se na Sicília e aqui foi atribuída à nobreza de Messina. Em todo caso, a família sempre conseguiu produzir uma série de homens que tornaram seu nome famoso, no serviço público, nas profissões liberais e eclesiásticas e no serviço militar.
