Antica ed assai nobile famiglia, originaria della terra omonima, nella quale si trovano di essa antichissime e preclari memorie. Questa famiglia si contende con il casato dei Gaetani l'onore di aver dato quel Giovanni, detto di Gaeta, che, nel 1118, fu proclamato Papa, col nome di Gelasio II. Essa ha goduto nobiltà in Napoli, ai seggi di Porto e Portanuova, ed in Cosenza; dopo l'abolizione dei sedili fu ascritta nel Libro d'Oro napoletano. Il primo personaggio di cui abbiamo notizia è un altro Giovanni, fiorente nel 1084, che possedeva diverse signorie in Napoli. Nel 1382 Francesco di Gaeta, di Napoli, fu nominato castellano del Castel di Sant’Angelo della città di Corfù, da re Carlo III di Durazzo. Nel 1392 Giacomo fu nominato castellano del Castello della Rocca d'Aspro; nel Quattrocento altro Giacomo, giureconsulto, fu giudice.
