Família antiga e muito nobre, originária da terra homônima, na qual há lembranças muito antigas e precárias. Esta família luta com a família de Gaetani pela honra de ter dado que Giovanni, chamado di Gaeta, que, em 1118, foi proclamado Papa, com o nome de Gelasio II. Apreciava nobreza em Nápoles, nas sedes do Porto e Portanuova, e em Cosenza; após a abolição dos assentos, foi inscrito no Livro de Ouro napolitano. O primeiro personagem que conhecemos é outro Giovanni, florescendo em 1084, que possuía vários senhorios em Nápoles. Em 1382, Francesco di Gaeta, de Nápoles, foi nomeado castelão do Castel di Sant'Angelo na cidade de Corfu, pelo rei Carlos III de Durres.
