Antica ed assai nobile famiglia catalana, di chiara ed avita virtù, propagatasi, nel corso dei secoli, in diverse regioni europee. Tal casato è originario del municipio de Farrera, provincia di Lleida, da cui ha tratto il proprio nome. Nei testi più antichi ci si riferisce al casato come Farrera. Il primo personaggio di cui abbiamo notizia è un Antonio Farrera, cavaliere di San Juan, che nel 1334 era commissario di Lleida. La tradizione vuole che il casato sia giunto in Sicilia con Ferrerio de Farrera nel 1399, divenuto poi barone di metà del feudo di Catuso, dei feudi di Galasi, Belice, Sala, Birribbaida. Proprio in Sicilia il casato mutò parzialmente cognominizzazione e fu spesso trascritto come Ferrera o Ferreri. In ogni modo, tal casato ebbe in proprietà il principato di S. Anna, il marchesato di Anguilla, le baronie di S. Bartolomeo, Cachimo, Cicera, Vescara e S. Venera, S. Giorgio o
