Família antiga de S. Miniato, onde construiu um palácio sumptuoso no século XVI; foi atribuído à cidadania florentina em 1367; lá ele desfrutou das primeiras honras da República, e Michele foi secretária de Michele de 1474 a 1478. Dedicada aos Médici, Andrea era o garçom secreto de Leão X e Clemente VII; e Monsenhor Ugolino, já um secretário de confiança do duque Cosimo I, foi criado por este comandante da região de Altopascio. A família tinha três cavaleiros de S. Stefano e a família já inscrita na nobreza de S. Miniato foi admitida no patrício florentino em 1751. Outro ramo. Família bolonhesa da qual um ramo transplantou para Roma. As primeiras lembranças dessa família remontam a um Giovanni que viveu em 1129. Il cavaliere Pietro Gaetano di Michele Grifoni, appartenente a una linea estinta nel 1796, era stato ammesso al patriziato fiorentino nel 1751, insieme al cavaliere Ugolino di Cosimo Grifoni.
