Originaria della Toscana dal castello di Pontormo posto tra Firenze e Pisa. Trasferitasi a Firenze nel XIII secolo, due rami di essa, per le lotte de' Guelfi e Ghibellini furono costretti ad esulare prendendo stanza, uno in Bologna e l'altro in Modena. A questa la casa Manzoli à dato molti conservatori di reggenza, ed uno di questi, Girolamo, nel 1542 firmò il celebre Formulario della Fede che il pontefice Paolo III pretese dagl'Accademici di Modena accusati di essere sostenitori dell'eresia di Lutero. L'imperat. Carlo V, con diploma 4 Mar. 1530 concesse a Giovanni-Andrea il titolo di conte trasmissibilie a' suoi discendenti in infinito. Nel 1417 questa famiglia fu ascritta al patriziato modenese, e nel XVII secolo alla nobiltà di Bologna e a quella di Ferrara. Con diploma 24 Feb. 1753, Francesco III Duca di Modena dichiarò conti ereditari, coi loro discendenti in infinito, i fratelli Giovanni-Andrea, Francesco, Andrea e Benedetto,

Partito; a destra spaccato di rosso e d'azzurro, al bue rampante d'argento, col capo dell'impero, che è dei Manzoli; a sinistra d'azzurro, a tre stelle d'oro ordinate in capo; la punta di verde, a tre monti di rosso, nel mezzo de' quali l'apertura di una caverna di nero nella quale riposa un leone d'oro; col capo d'oro, caricato di un'aquila spiegata di nero, coronata del campo, che è dei del Monte. Cimiero: Un'aquila di nero, coronata d'oro.
