The ancient lineage of the counts of Marsciano, lords of most of Umbria, with sovereign prerogatives, received in 1338 the emperor Lodovico the Bavaro in his castle of Poggio Aquilone. Abbot Ughelli in 1667 published its history highlighting its merits. Among the many documents published by him on the ancient imperial and pontifical investitures, we note the Brief of Leo X of 10 January 1518 with which he confirms them all to Antonio di Marsciano, giving him full jurisdiction of the lands of Castel Parrano, Castel Migliano, Poggio Aquilone, Montegiove , etc. with mere and mixed empire. The counts of Marsciano, owned more than 50 fiefdoms and in Orvieto, where they had their main headquarters, occupied the primary offices, being ascribed to the Orders of Malta and of S. Stefano. B.
