L'antichissima stirpe dei conti di Marsciano, signori di gran parte dell'Umbria, con prerogative sovrane, ricevette nel 1338 l'imperatore Lodovico il Bavaro nel suo castello di Poggio Aquilone. Fra i molti documenti da lui pubblicati sulle antiche investiture imperiali e pontificie, notiamo il Breve di Leone X del 10 gennaio 1518 col quale le conferma tutte ad Antonio di Marsciano, dandogli piena giurisdizione delle terre di Castel Parrano, Castel Migliano, Poggio Aquilone, Montegiove, ecc. con mero e misto imperio. I conti di Marsciano, possedettero più di 50 feudi e ad Orvieto, dove avevano la sede principale, occuparono le primarie cariche, venendo ascritto agli Ordini di Malta e di S.Stefano.
