Alguns autores acreditam que essa família, também escrita como Piccolella, é o ramo da ilustre Casa Piccolomini de Stana. Encontra-se atribuído ao Patrício de Ravello, na época do rei Carlos II de Anjou, com o soldado Gualtiero, familiar desse rei. Nos Arquivos do Estado de Nápoles (Reg. Ang. 1308, folha 186-7), a premissa concedida pelo Rei é marcada 15 de março de 1309 ao soldado chamado Gualtiero, para que de Ravello, onde ele estava a serviço da R. Corte, ele pudesse ir para Siena, sua terra natal. Há também notícias de Scipione di Piccolella, capitão real em S. Pietro in Galatina, em 1473, e outros membros da família, parentes da rainha Giovanna em 1415.
