Antigua y muy noble familia boloñesa, de clara y ancestral virtud, que se ha extendido a lo largo de los siglos en varias regiones de Italia. Con respecto al origen de esta cognominación, los estudiosos no están de acuerdo: en realidad podría derivarse del nombre griego "Staneus", sino también del personal germánico medieval "Stannus" o del gótico "Stannis".
