Família bolonhesa antiga e muito nobre, de virtude clara e ancestral, que se espalhou ao longo dos séculos em várias regiões da Itália. No que diz respeito à origem dessa cognominação, os estudiosos não concordam: ela poderia de fato derivar do nome grego "Staneus", mas também da equipe germânica medieval "Stannus" ou do gótico "Stannis". De qualquer forma, a clara nobreza da família Stagni é confirmada por sua presença nos valiosos trabalhos: "Brasão à bolonhesa - brasões das famílias nobres e urbanas de Bolonha colecionadas por Floriano Canetoli", edição editada pelo abade Dal Fiore e impressa em Bolonha (1791 -1795) de Floriano Canetoli e "O dicionário brasão histórico de famílias italianas nobres e notáveis que estão extintas e florescendo", do genealogista Giovan Battista di Crollalanza, publicado em Pisa em 1886 em três volumes, com mais de 1400 páginas. D'azzurro, al capriolo di rosso, accompagnato in capo da una stella d'oro, ed in punta da un giglio dello stesso; col capo d'Angiò.
