Antiga e muito nobre família de Altamura, então passada também para Roma e Picerno, de clara e ancestral virtude, conhecida como Viti ou Vitti (de), espalhada ao longo dos séculos em várias regiões da Itália e da Europa. A origem deste sobrenome deve ser procurada em uma variação do sobrenome latino "Vitus". De qualquer forma, a família pertencia à nobreza de Altamura desde tempos muito remotos. No ano de 1600, tornou-se senhor feudal da terra de Carafa, na Calábria, enquanto no ano de 1714 foi adornado pelo imperador Carlos VI com o título de conde transmissível por ordem de primogenitura. Ela foi então recebida, por justiça, na Ordem SM de Malta e por honra e devoção, como a quarta da família de Alexandre (Grande Magistério Roma, Proc. On. E dev. N. 114).
