Der Ursprung dieses Familiennamens ist in einer Variation des lateinischen Familiennamens „Vitus“ zu suchen. Jedenfalls gehörte die Familie seit sehr alter Zeit dem Adel von Altamura an. Im Jahr 1600 wurde es Feudalherr des Landes Carafa in Kalabrien, während es im Jahr 1714 von Kaiser Karl VI. mit dem Titel eines übertragbaren Grafen von der Ordnung der Erstgeburt geschmückt wurde.
