Quien fuera el principal ascendiente y troncal propagador de este ilustre linaje se ignora por su remota antigüedad, siendo por tanto tradicional e inmemorial la nobleza de sus hijos, los cuales han gozado siempre y en todas partes de la consideración y preeminencias correspondientes a sus lustrosos nacimiento, no siendo la menos esclarecida de sus líneas la que se arraigó y floreció en Guipúzcoa. El antiguo y noble apellido Cano no procede de un mismo solar y tronco, puesto que las numerosas familias Cano, estan extendidas por España y América. Tuvo, por el contrario, este apellido en distintas regiones de la Península diversas casas solares, sin realción entre algunas de ellas de vínculo de parentesco. Mencionaremos las más principales. En la provincia de Santander hubo un antiguo solar de Cano (ignoramos el lugar en que radicó), cuyas ramas de extendieron por todas la Montaña y a las cuales pertenecieron los siguientes individuos, que hicieron información de hidalguía ante la Real Chancillería de Valladolid, en los años que se indican: Juan y Pedro del Cano, vecino de Potes en 1589, Juan Cano Pellón, vecin de Agüero, lugar de la Junta de Cudeyo y partido judicial de Santoña en 1722; Francisco cano, vecino de Liérganes, en el mismo partido, 1723; Sebastián Cano, vecino de San Roque de Rumiera y Liérganes en 1717; Bartolomé Cano, vecino del lugar de Miera, también del partido judicial de Santoña, 1762; Marcos Cano, vecino de Ramales, 1730; Miguel Cano, natural del Valle de Ruesga y vecino de Gibaja, del parido judicial de Ramales, 1762; José Cano Santamaría, vecino de Hoz y Marrón, lugares del Ayuntamiento de Ampuero y partido judicial de Laredo en 1731 y Antonio Cano Pellón, vecino de Hijas, Valle de Toranzo y partido judicial de Villacarriedo. De todas estas sagas familiares hay formas muy diferentes del apellido, siendo todas de una misma cuna.
