Antichissima ed assai nobile famiglia originaria di Arcevia ma con residenze anche in Ancona e Sassoferrato, le cui prime memorie risalgono al secolo decimo terzo. Capostipite conosciuto e certo è Giovan Battista, vivente nel 1480. La famiglia fu dilettissima a papa Pio IV, a Cosimo III granduca di Toscana, a Francesco Maria II di Urbino e ai papi Innocenzo XI e Clemente XI, tanto che ne insignirono dei loro ordini cavallereschi diversi membri. Alberto I, uditore del card. Enrico Caetani, poi frate cappuccino, morì 1588.
