Con regio diploma, in data 4 novembre 1794, Vittorio Amedeo II concedeva a favore di Onorato Cortese, negoziante in Cagliari, e dei suoi figli e discendenti per linea mascolina i titoli di cavalierato e di nobiltà, in riconoscimento di speciali benemerenze verso le finanze dello Stato. La famiglia fa uso dello stemma concessogli, e ad essa spettano i seguenti titoli: ai maschi, cavaliere e nobile con la qualifica di don; alle femmine, nobile con la qualifica di donna. Le figlie di Onorato: Maria, Luigia Battistina. Altro ramo. Nel 1306 furono scacciati da Modena e furono esclusi dal ruolo delle nobili e potenti famiglie modenesi, perché avversi agli Estensi. Giovanni e Battista Cortese erano tra i conservatori di Modena nel 1417.
