Dicen algunos escritores antiguos que el origen de este apellido fué la devoción que muchos caballeros profesaban a la enseña de nuestra religión y que los impulsaba a adoptar este sobrenombre. Lo cierto es que hubo en España distintas casas de C. o de la C. Las Memorias de Juan Rodríguez del Padrón, Doncel de Don Juan II, y Fray Felipe de la Gándara, dicen que hubo cerca de Pontevedra un solar infanzonado del apellido C.; pero no es verisímil que de éste procedan, como algunos pretenden, todas las familias apellidadas C. y radicadas en distintas regiones de España, ni siquiera las de origen gallego, pues en Galicia hay muchos lugares denominados C. cuyo nombre debieron tomar por apellido familias distintas de la dimanada del mencionado solar próximo a Pontevedra. Otro solar muy antiguo de la C. hubo en la villa de Briviesca (Burgos). Así lo afirma el libro Becerro, de Castilla. Otras casas del mismo apellido radicaron en Asturias, León, Vizcaya y Andalucía. De Galicia fué originaria de la familia de la C., que en el primer tercio del siglo XVII se estableció en Jalapa, departamento de Veracruz (Méjico), pasando también a la Florida. A Chile pasó una línea dimanada de la familia de la C. que tuvo su asiento en la villa de Tavernas (Almería). Otra familia muy principal, que se estableció en Chile, en la ciudad de Talca, es originaria de Génova, pues fué su fundador Juan de la C., natural de Génova, que sirvió en los ejércitos españoles de Felipe V y Carlos III.
