Antica ed illustre famiglia veneta, di chiara ed avita virtù, propagatasi, nel corso dei secoli, in diverse regioni d'Italia e del mondo. Tradizione vuole che essa discenda dai nobilissimi Bernardini di Lucca, in Toscana, di cui si hanno notizie storiche sin dalla seconda metà del XII secolo, con Guido Bernardini, Signore di Montemagno. Giovanni Bernardini fu il primo rappresentante a entrare nel governo della Repubblica nel 1378, nel 1388 divenne Gonfaloniere. Da allora i Bernardini furono Gonfalonieri della Repubblica per ben 72 volte. Tra i personaggi più importanti del casato va indubbiamente ricordato Inghiramo di Montemagno che fu podestà di Lucca negli anni 1200, 1203 e 1204 e capitano dell’esercito di Lucca nell’anno 1222, in occasione delle guerre contro Pisa, Pistoia e la potente fazione dei Porcaresi.
